THE BLACK LIPS

The Black Lips are what you could call true visionaries of a skeptical age. Even from their very first 7" EP, you could tell they were doing their own thing on their own terms, and of course it didn't sit well, even with the dawning of the 21st century and all it promised. Wildly cross-eyed broken stars destined to waver in their importance in the cosmos, they know no boundaries and they take no pretense. Like a volatile and teetering amalgamation of the SWELL MAPS trying to cover the SWINGIN' MEDALLIONS, it's just not right for this world. Unless you long for the unhinged freedom that comes with music that challenges everything without becoming an unlistenable mess of sound. It's a dazzling catastrophe that needs to be absorbed before it vaporizes into thin air. The fun these guys have is hard to hide either live or on record. Seriously slurred swashbucklers living out the ultimate teenage dream, yet breaking through another layer of remarkable idiocy, transcribed through hallucinations, exasperation, and perfectly casual dick fumbling.

Such perennial sophistication causes the very foundation of "FLOWER PUNK" to be lysergisized, germinated, fertilized, and fully pollenated. Let it Bloom, and it's fruit, will feed the next generation of off-centered, slop-a-licious rock'n roll pioneers for years to come. How the Black Lips manage to walk through the perfumed garden of life is a miracle of modern bullshit, but a miracle nonetheless. Their validity is overwhelming and so refreshing, it almost makes me dizzy, and the way they can find their way through the mundane darkness of modern music and discover their own notes and chords between the lines is unparalleled by their peers. Their substance is real, their new album is prerequisite, and their message is disturbingly clear. Rock'n Roll is soul-stirringly powerful and unpredictable, and there's nothing more important than that. It's not everyday that a band can exorcize such an atrociously beautiful THIRD album, so it may be hard for you to grasp, like the rest of us. These boys have tapped into a very secret well that everyone wants to drink from. Too bad it's got weird bent rainbows and chunks of shit floating in it. -

Todd Killings, Horizontal Action Magazine 2005

I can't get enough of these guys at the moment!

THE KRAVIN A's

Formed in late 1987 The Kravin' A's was Bruce Brand's post Milkshakes vehicle(well one of them, anyway!) where the former drummer now found himself dusting off his Fender Telecaster and Vox AC30 to perform some annoyingly fine garage guitar playing! Along for the ride were former Offbeat(later Goodchilde and Groovy Uncle) Glenn Prangnell, ex- Daggerman(later Goodchilde, Sergeants Mess and Buff Medway's) Jon Barker and former Thee Mighty Caesar Johnny Gawen. Towards the end of the band, Johnny was replaced by Wolf Howard (ex-Daggermen,Buff Medway's, Goodchilde etc) The Kravin'A's recorded one album in February 1988 which remained unreleased until Billy Childish put it out on his Hangman label in 1991 on vinyl only, but "Krave On" was finally issued on CD by Get Hip in 1993. That same year, the boys reformed to record a four track E.P "Pushin' And A Shovin'" at the now legendary Toe Rag Studios, where Jane Prangnell and Holly Golightly(prior to her solo success) provided backing vocals as The Cork Tips! It was released on Screaming Apple Records. Although the band recorded some great cover versions (their take on The Classmates "Pay Day" is stonkingly good!) the strength is their originals.

THE KING SOUND QUARTET

Mick Collins – vocals, guitar
Tim Kerr – guitar
Alex Cuervo – bass
Stephanie Friedman – drums

Founded in 1996, the King Sound Quartet began as four very different personalities coming together to make music with soul. Not wanting to limit themselves to one particular niche, the KSQ drew on 60’s soul, R&B, garage rock, hardcore punk, and free-jazz (see their 20 minute version of Sun Ra’s "Space Is The Place"). They are recognized as a super group of underground no-counts. Under the guidance of Young Lion Conspirator Tim Kerr (formerly of the Big Boys, POISON 13!!, and currently of the Lord High Fixers), the band cranked out some incredibly inspired music that resulted in their vinyl-only LP on In The Red and an excellent single on Estrus. After the initial recording sessions, everybody went back to his or her usual bands and day jobs - no live shows were ever performed. In the year 2000 a second album was planned with Matt Verta Ray (Speedball Baby) joining the fold as an additional guitarist. This session failed due to differences too vast to list here, and, unfortunately, served as the final nail (and all the dirt) on the KSQ coffin.

THE DUKES OF HAMBURG

The Dukes of Hamburg are an all-star Garage rock/R&B review from San Francisco who claim to be from Hamburg, Germany. They do high energy, extremely listenable danceable 60's standards, and have truly become cult favorites on the West Coast and in Europe, where they have toured frequently. Lead singer Russell Quan is a bona-fide garage rock legend, he co-founded The Mummies and is a current/former member of the Phantom Surfers, Bobbyteens, Count Backwurds and The Flakes, just to name a few.

DIGGER & THE PUSSYCATS

You may be asking yourself “Who the fuck are Digger & The Pussycats?”…well they’re two blokes from Australia who’ve been playing trashy rock’n’roll since forming at the start of 2003.Sometimes a band comes hurtling outta the primordial ooze with such teeth-gnashing force and insurgent brilliance it knocks you in the chest like some kinda rock'n'roll one inch punch. Oof! The debut album from fucked-up blues-punk outfit Digger & the Pussycats, captures Melbourne's finest two-piece Andy Moore (drums/vocals) and Sam Agostino (guitar/vocals), notorious band sluts on the Melbourne music scene, coming together to form the most fucked-up blues-punk two-piece in town. With songs about lying, cheating and stolen motorcycles, this album will take you back to the rock and roll sounds of Pussy Galore, the Gun Club, the Cramps and the Make-up, whilst reeking of danger, death and adultery. It's time to get your head around the fact that they're just the tonic for someone who's " Young, Tight & Alright" . They are what rock'n'roll's all about: Moments of pure insanity, after which you have absolutely no fair reason for your thoughts or actions. The songs are grizzly, fuzzy two chord one-dollar specials. Your new rock heroes indeed!

THE RUMBLERS

Actually, the Rumblers first started out as “Ronnie & the Rumblers” when Ron Cooley who sang & played guitar put together a foursome which included Dennis Duncan (tenor sax), Doug Robertson (drums), and Dave Robinson (alto sax). Many of the band’s early appearances were at the old “Rock-it-Club" on Cornell Ave in Yakima, run by Bob & Pat Gursley. More than a few careers were started there and more than a few fond memories can trace their origins back to the dances at the Rock-it-Club!

When Ron moved away less than a year later, Dave Morgan joined the band and filled the need for a guitar player and singer. Gene Boyd was added next as lead guitar. Shortly thereafter, Dick Ruthardt, a bass player & singer from Grandview, and Leland Elliot a drummer from Wapato, came aboard (to replace Dave Robinson and Doug Robertson). The band remained stable with these five core musicians (Gene, Dennis, Lee, Dave & Dick) for nearly the remainder of its existence. With a focus on blending their individual sounds, they developed a well-integrated cohesive sound and became the “Rumblers” with the rock & roll sound that hundreds of Yakima Valley teenagers loved to listen and dance to.

They played dances throughout the Yakima Valley at the Eagles, Knights of Columbus, the Carpenters Hall, The Wagon Wheel, Toppenish Long House, and the Filipino Community Hall, and the Terrace Heights Community Center. In a competitive “Battle of the Bands” at the Yakima Armory they emerged victorious over their rivals, the Checkers, another Yakima Valley band.

As the Rumblers popularity grew, they began to play many Central Washington venues, often opening for other performers. On one occasion, they were the opening band for Lloyd Price of “Stagger Lee” fame. Outside the Yakima Valley, the Rumblers performed in various towns in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Utah, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota. It was during this time that Jimmy Bowen, a recording star for Roulette Records, adopted the Rumblers as his backup band. Jimmy went on to become one of the most influential record producers in the industry. The Rumblers always considered him a good friend and certainly an important and significant player in their history. While on tour in the Midwest at Kay Bank Studios in Minneapolis, the Rumblers recorded and released their single “Trudgin” on the Darbo label. It was later played on American Bandstand.

As the band began to diminish due to marriage, military obligations, etc., a different band evolved. Ironically, it consisted of the remaining members of the Rumblers and their longtime rivals, the Checkers. Added were: Glen Dahl (vocals). Mike Metko (sax), Mike Mandel (keyboard), and Larry Coryell (guitar). Many of the engagements were in Canada, notably Kimberly, Cranbrook, Penticton and Vernon, BC. Eventually there were more Checkers than Rumblers and the band became the Checkers, sadly leaving the name “Rumblers” for the use of the hot rod clubs.

THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY

Taken from wikipedia (i'm feeling lazy) :

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, born Norman Carl Odam on October 10, 1947 in Lubbock,Texas, was an incoherent rock and roll performer who invented an early example of the genre that came to be known as psychobilly in the 1960s. While often considered a novelty artist, he considers himself a serious performer.
He recorded his only "hit," the song Paralyzed, in 1968, in what was, apparently, a moment of spare time in a recording studio in Texas. T-Bone Burnett played drums on the record. The lyrics to this magnum opus are unintelligible snarls, growls, and similar vocalisms, surrounded by frantic strumming on acoustic guitar, Burnett's equally frantic drumming, and occasional yelps of what sounds like the song's title, "Paralyzed!"
Five hundred copies of the single were initially pressed. It earned the Cowboy an appearance on Laugh-In, the TV comedy show. Unfortunately, a musicians' strike forced the postponement of some follow-up TV appearances for Odam, and by the time the strike was over, his 15 minutes of fame were up. Paralyzed went on to be featured on several Doctor Demento compilations, and it often appears prominently in lists of the worst recordings ever made. The Cowboy has recorded a number of songs since Paralyzed, one of them being covered by David Bowie on his Heathen album. Odam returned the compliment by recording his version of Space Oddity.
David Bowie has been a fan of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, who likes to be called "The Ledge", since he heard "Paralyzed". Bowie himself has said that the "Stardust" in "Ziggy Stardust" is taken from The Legendary Stardust Cowboy.
