THE SUPER BLUES BAND

ELETRIC EELS

The electric eels played only five public shows, but during their brief existence they earned a reputation locally for being angry, confrontational, and violent. They were notorious for starting fights with audiences which drew police attention; members were also abusive to each other off-stage. Their style was a dischordant, noisy amalgam of glam rock and free jazz that was generally considered to be very obnoxious. The electric eels later became very influential with the harder-edged East Coast punk groups in the U.S., particularly The Dead Boys. One of their most famous tracks was "Agitated".Though their recordings were all lo-fi, and never saw the light of day until after the band had already split

THE SPITS

The Spits are a Seattle-based punk musical group. Currently, the band has released three albums, all officially self-titled but unofficially titled 1, 2, and 3, released by Nickel and Dime Records, Slovenly Recordings, and Dirtnap Records, respectively.
The band describes itself as "Punk for the People", and focuses on loud, noisy, and dirty punk rock. Band members frequently appear in costumes on stage (e.g. graduation robes, reagan masks, or toilet paper "mummy" costumes), and focus on the dirty, low-budget sound and presentation of garage punk.

CEDELL DAVIS

Cedell Davis was born Ellis Davis on June 9, 1927, in Helena, then a booming river town on the Arkansas bank of the Mississippi. He grew up there and in the upper Mississippi Delta around eight miles south of Tunica, on the E.M. Hood plantation, where his brother lived. Together with one of his childhood friends, Isaiah Ross (future Sun recording artist Dr. Ross the Harmonica Boss), Cedell began playing blues, first harmonica, then some guitar.
Then tragedy struck -- during his ninth and tenth years he grappled with severe polio. He returned to Helena, to his mother, who was locally renowned as a healer, though she worked as a cook, and there he began the painful process of relearning, in fact rethinking the guitar, which he could no longer play in the conventional manner. "It took me about three years," he recalls. "I was right- handed, but I couldn't use my right hand, so I had to turn the guitar around; I play left-handed now. But I still needed something to slide with, and my mother had these knives, a set of silverware, and I kinda swiped one of 'em."
This was the beginning of a guitar style that is utterly unique, in or out of blues. The knife-handle on the strings produces uneven pressure, which results in a welter of metal-stress harmonic transients and a singular tonal plasticity. Some people who hear CeDell's playing for the first time think it's out of tune, but it would be more accurate to say he plays in an alternative tuning. Because the way he hears and plays intervals and chords is consistent and systematic.
Cedell began playing around the Delta as a young man, and over the years he continued to work in some of the world's most dangerous dives. Somehow he learned to project a kind of presence that defuses violence, keeping him miraculously whole amid raging chaos. There is something Buddah-like about that presence, a sense of having learned to deal with a physically violent world with his mind. It also enables him to compose and sequence verses for new songs on the spot and hold them in his memory for as long as necessary.
Over the years Cedell has played in Southern juke joints with a number of other musicians. His most significant and longest-lasting association was with the great Robert Nighthawk, who was considered the Delta's finest slide guitarist by no less an authority than Muddy Waters. They worked together for ten years straight, roughly 1953-'63, trading off "bassing" and lead duties song by song. During the early part of his time with Nighthawk, Cedell was based in St. Louis, where he got to know Big Joe Williams, Charlie Jordan, J.D. "Jelly Jaw" Short, and other leading lights. But during the last part of 1957, he was badly injured in a St. Louis tavern, when an apparent police raid caused a massive stampede. Before that, CeDell could at least walk on crutches. But his legs were broken in so many places during the stampede that he has been largely confined to a wheelchair ever since.
On June 5, 1961, he "came back home to play." At first he was based in Helena, but after he secured a regular gig with Nighthawk at the Jack Rabbit (later the Jungle Hut) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, he settled there, and there he remains. Pine Bluff's other claims to fame include a massive U.S. Government chemical and biological warfare research and storage facility, located nearby; and according to CeDell's song, "If You Like Fat Women," there are "more fat women there than any place I ever saw."

Many listeners find CeDell difficult: his sense of time, his sense of structure, that timing--not to mention his lyrics. CeDell is a remarkable communicator, and quite possible the greatest hard core vocalist around.

LOS SAICOS

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Los Saicos were a Peruvian rock band formed in Lima in 1964 by four amateur musicians just out of high school. They have come to be considered the most original and influential Latin American garage rock band of the 1960s. They released six singles (and no LP) between 1965 and 1966, all songs being originals by Erwin Flores (guitar and vocals) and Rolando Carpio (lead guitar).
Contrary to some myths, they were not aware of US garage rock or of the wilder British bands like the Downliners Sect; yet, even though they listened mostly to the best-known British Invasion bands (Beatles, Stones, Animals), they came up with a wild garage/surf sound that is unlike anything else recorded in Latin America at the time, and perhaps only paralleled by bands like the Sonics in North America.
They were pioneers in writing their own Spanish-language songs, and they were also probably the only garage band anywhere to have been the most successful pop act in their country, as they were in 1965. Their anthem "Demolición" was one of the biggest radio hits of the year in Peru. They even had their own national TV program during 1965.
Los Saicos, who released all but one single through the small DisPerú label, unleashed "Saicomania" and led the way for dozens of bands throughout Peru. They have become legendary and many myths were created around their short existence and mysterious disappearance.
Recently they revealed that, once they perceived their fame to be waning in 1966, they simply decided to stop playing and began to live relatively "normal" lives, with two Saicos (singer Erwin Flores and singer/bass player César "Papi" Castrillón) eventually moving to the US and still living there. Sadly, Rolando Carpio passed away in early 2005. Drummer Pancho Guevara still lives in Lima.

Just as it says on the tin, everything they did on one CD. A highly consistent and damn spectacular beat group that from their inception in '65 have been cruelly ignored. They even had a single banned by the BBC and still notoriety didn't follow them! Superbly aggressive outfit that, although originally borrowing sonically from the Who, soon moved off on their own. This collection brings together all of their released output, plus demos...sorry its in two parts..i'm still shit at uploading.

JACK 'O' FIRE

JACK O'FIRE
It was with Jack O’Fire that the first references to The Young Lions Conspiracy emerged (although Tim’s contact with it dated from his days with the Big Boys). Philosophy? Attitude? A way of life? This is something that Tim tried hard to emphasize in all of his projects. It’s important to mention Jack O’Fire’s role in the recovery of Mike Carroll (Poison 13) as a singer, after an extensive period of inactivity. He sings on the "Punkin’" single. He also sometimes appeared on stage with them in the band’s last year or so. Later on, he would form the Lord High Fixers with Tim.
Jack O’Fire’s line up was Tim (guitar), Walter Daniels (vocals and harmonica, he was in Austin’s Blood Sucking Go-Devils), Dean Gunderson (bass, he was in Seattle’s Cat Butt, and Josh LaRue (drums, he was in Rain Like the Sound of Trains, Sevens, The Sorts, and now plays in HiM).
In a more sporadic way, other musicians also played with the band: Dave Crider (Estrus, from Mono Men, Watts, The Dt’s), Pepper Wilson (from Austin’s Death Valley), and Pat Barker-Benfield (from Austin’s McLemore Avenue), who would later be the Hammond organ player in Total Sound Group Direct Action Committee.
With Jack O’Fire, Tim and his partners committed themselves to the fine art of covering their favorite artists. A real cover band, who enhanced raw originals with their own arsenal of harsh and infectious blues, who played with an abandoned release of frantic activity, like they were performing some kind of obscure voodoo ritual or black magic from the Louisiana swamps. Invocating the spirits of the masters of blues, (Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Hound Dog Taylor, Sonny Boy Williamson), the masters of rock'n'roll (Chuck Berry, Link Wray), the masters of Rhythm&Blues and Soul (Blind Willie McTell, Booker T & the MGs), they shouted their prayers wrapped in fire with honesty, sincerity, and fully believing in what they were doing. Not only did they bite from these genres, they would not refuse to play any music they thought good to share. They managed to amaze and confound audiences with covers from Joy Division (“No Love Lost”), Negative Approach (“Can't Tell No One”), Frank Zappa (“Trouble Everyday”), Wire (“12XU”), and The Fall (“A Year And A Day”). They also changed songs of many other bands to the Jack O’Fire sound: Sonics, The Beguiled, The Fall Outs, Billy Childish, Small Faces, Pretty Things, Lyrics, and a long list of etc.s that would take from here till next year to list, pointing out that their prolific discography is a puzzle for the collectors.
(Although, as it seems to happen with most of Tim’s bands, most of this stuff is compiled on CD to avoid possible dramas and spending your life savings, unless, of course, you’re one those vinyl junkies.)
Jack O’Fire CD compilations are: “The Destruction Of Squaresville” (Estrus, 1994) which compiles their first records (two 7” and two 10”); “Forever: The Final Chapter” (SFTRI, 1996) which collects the four chapters of the “Soul Music 101” series (three 7” and one 10”), and several singles released on In The Red, Vendetta, Static and Dishy; and “Beware The Souless Cool” (1+2 Records, 1996) which compiles tracks from records released on 7” on Estrus, on In the Red, and on No Lie Music.
If impossible to buy the originals on wax the owner of these CD’s will have at least a large percentage of the material released by Jack O’Fire - truly indispensable and revealing experience.

THE SCREWS

Epitaph recording artists the Red Aunts went to Detroit in 1997 to record their swan song album, "Ghetto Blaster", at Ghetto Recorders studio with Mick Collins as their chosen producer. The Red Aunts had long been fans of Mick's work and Mick was a fan of the Red Aunts. During a moment of inspiration, the Aunts decided to have Mick record a duet with RA vocalist/guitarist Terri Wahl - this planted the seeds for what would later become The Screws. Mick and Terri hatched the band during one of Mick's many sojourns to Los Angeles for a comic book convention. They quickly enlisted the duties of rhythm-section-for-hire Dan Brown and Marty Moore (from Jacksonville Beach, Florida) to take part. Dan and Marty had a two-piece band called Johnny Hash who'd recorded two singles for ITR as well as having both done time in '68 Comeback. Dan is also known as on/off (as of the time of this writing ON) bass player for Royal Trux. Once the Screws album had been recorded everyone went back to their other projects and forgot about it. After the record's release, however, offers began to roll in for live appearances and Mick and Terri did not want to disappoint. The band toured the western half of the US and the eastern half of the hemisphere (Japan) now with Jimmy Hole (Necessary Evils) on bass and Kerry Davis (Red Aunts) on drums. Their blues infused slop-punk sounds have delighted and offended crowds wherever they went.

THE BLACK LIPS

The Black Lips are what you could call true visionaries of a skeptical age. Even from their very first 7" EP, you could tell they were doing their own thing on their own terms, and of course it didn't sit well, even with the dawning of the 21st century and all it promised. Wildly cross-eyed broken stars destined to waver in their importance in the cosmos, they know no boundaries and they take no pretense. Like a volatile and teetering amalgamation of the SWELL MAPS trying to cover the SWINGIN' MEDALLIONS, it's just not right for this world. Unless you long for the unhinged freedom that comes with music that challenges everything without becoming an unlistenable mess of sound. It's a dazzling catastrophe that needs to be absorbed before it vaporizes into thin air. The fun these guys have is hard to hide either live or on record. Seriously slurred swashbucklers living out the ultimate teenage dream, yet breaking through another layer of remarkable idiocy, transcribed through hallucinations, exasperation, and perfectly casual dick fumbling.

Such perennial sophistication causes the very foundation of "FLOWER PUNK" to be lysergisized, germinated, fertilized, and fully pollenated. Let it Bloom, and it's fruit, will feed the next generation of off-centered, slop-a-licious rock'n roll pioneers for years to come. How the Black Lips manage to walk through the perfumed garden of life is a miracle of modern bullshit, but a miracle nonetheless. Their validity is overwhelming and so refreshing, it almost makes me dizzy, and the way they can find their way through the mundane darkness of modern music and discover their own notes and chords between the lines is unparalleled by their peers. Their substance is real, their new album is prerequisite, and their message is disturbingly clear. Rock'n Roll is soul-stirringly powerful and unpredictable, and there's nothing more important than that. It's not everyday that a band can exorcize such an atrociously beautiful THIRD album, so it may be hard for you to grasp, like the rest of us. These boys have tapped into a very secret well that everyone wants to drink from. Too bad it's got weird bent rainbows and chunks of shit floating in it. -

Todd Killings, Horizontal Action Magazine 2005

I can't get enough of these guys at the moment!

THE KRAVIN A's

Formed in late 1987 The Kravin' A's was Bruce Brand's post Milkshakes vehicle(well one of them, anyway!) where the former drummer now found himself dusting off his Fender Telecaster and Vox AC30 to perform some annoyingly fine garage guitar playing! Along for the ride were former Offbeat(later Goodchilde and Groovy Uncle) Glenn Prangnell, ex- Daggerman(later Goodchilde, Sergeants Mess and Buff Medway's) Jon Barker and former Thee Mighty Caesar Johnny Gawen. Towards the end of the band, Johnny was replaced by Wolf Howard (ex-Daggermen,Buff Medway's, Goodchilde etc) The Kravin'A's recorded one album in February 1988 which remained unreleased until Billy Childish put it out on his Hangman label in 1991 on vinyl only, but "Krave On" was finally issued on CD by Get Hip in 1993. That same year, the boys reformed to record a four track E.P "Pushin' And A Shovin'" at the now legendary Toe Rag Studios, where Jane Prangnell and Holly Golightly(prior to her solo success) provided backing vocals as The Cork Tips! It was released on Screaming Apple Records. Although the band recorded some great cover versions (their take on The Classmates "Pay Day" is stonkingly good!) the strength is their originals.

THE KING SOUND QUARTET

Mick Collins – vocals, guitar
Tim Kerr – guitar
Alex Cuervo – bass
Stephanie Friedman – drums

Founded in 1996, the King Sound Quartet began as four very different personalities coming together to make music with soul. Not wanting to limit themselves to one particular niche, the KSQ drew on 60’s soul, R&B, garage rock, hardcore punk, and free-jazz (see their 20 minute version of Sun Ra’s "Space Is The Place"). They are recognized as a super group of underground no-counts. Under the guidance of Young Lion Conspirator Tim Kerr (formerly of the Big Boys, POISON 13!!, and currently of the Lord High Fixers), the band cranked out some incredibly inspired music that resulted in their vinyl-only LP on In The Red and an excellent single on Estrus. After the initial recording sessions, everybody went back to his or her usual bands and day jobs - no live shows were ever performed. In the year 2000 a second album was planned with Matt Verta Ray (Speedball Baby) joining the fold as an additional guitarist. This session failed due to differences too vast to list here, and, unfortunately, served as the final nail (and all the dirt) on the KSQ coffin.

THE DUKES OF HAMBURG

The Dukes of Hamburg are an all-star Garage rock/R&B review from San Francisco who claim to be from Hamburg, Germany. They do high energy, extremely listenable danceable 60's standards, and have truly become cult favorites on the West Coast and in Europe, where they have toured frequently. Lead singer Russell Quan is a bona-fide garage rock legend, he co-founded The Mummies and is a current/former member of the Phantom Surfers, Bobbyteens, Count Backwurds and The Flakes, just to name a few.

DIGGER & THE PUSSYCATS

You may be asking yourself “Who the fuck are Digger & The Pussycats?”…well they’re two blokes from Australia who’ve been playing trashy rock’n’roll since forming at the start of 2003.Sometimes a band comes hurtling outta the primordial ooze with such teeth-gnashing force and insurgent brilliance it knocks you in the chest like some kinda rock'n'roll one inch punch. Oof! The debut album from fucked-up blues-punk outfit Digger & the Pussycats, captures Melbourne's finest two-piece Andy Moore (drums/vocals) and Sam Agostino (guitar/vocals), notorious band sluts on the Melbourne music scene, coming together to form the most fucked-up blues-punk two-piece in town. With songs about lying, cheating and stolen motorcycles, this album will take you back to the rock and roll sounds of Pussy Galore, the Gun Club, the Cramps and the Make-up, whilst reeking of danger, death and adultery. It's time to get your head around the fact that they're just the tonic for someone who's " Young, Tight & Alright" . They are what rock'n'roll's all about: Moments of pure insanity, after which you have absolutely no fair reason for your thoughts or actions. The songs are grizzly, fuzzy two chord one-dollar specials. Your new rock heroes indeed!

THE RUMBLERS

Actually, the Rumblers first started out as “Ronnie & the Rumblers” when Ron Cooley who sang & played guitar put together a foursome which included Dennis Duncan (tenor sax), Doug Robertson (drums), and Dave Robinson (alto sax). Many of the band’s early appearances were at the old “Rock-it-Club" on Cornell Ave in Yakima, run by Bob & Pat Gursley. More than a few careers were started there and more than a few fond memories can trace their origins back to the dances at the Rock-it-Club!

When Ron moved away less than a year later, Dave Morgan joined the band and filled the need for a guitar player and singer. Gene Boyd was added next as lead guitar. Shortly thereafter, Dick Ruthardt, a bass player & singer from Grandview, and Leland Elliot a drummer from Wapato, came aboard (to replace Dave Robinson and Doug Robertson). The band remained stable with these five core musicians (Gene, Dennis, Lee, Dave & Dick) for nearly the remainder of its existence. With a focus on blending their individual sounds, they developed a well-integrated cohesive sound and became the “Rumblers” with the rock & roll sound that hundreds of Yakima Valley teenagers loved to listen and dance to.

They played dances throughout the Yakima Valley at the Eagles, Knights of Columbus, the Carpenters Hall, The Wagon Wheel, Toppenish Long House, and the Filipino Community Hall, and the Terrace Heights Community Center. In a competitive “Battle of the Bands” at the Yakima Armory they emerged victorious over their rivals, the Checkers, another Yakima Valley band.

As the Rumblers popularity grew, they began to play many Central Washington venues, often opening for other performers. On one occasion, they were the opening band for Lloyd Price of “Stagger Lee” fame. Outside the Yakima Valley, the Rumblers performed in various towns in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Utah, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota. It was during this time that Jimmy Bowen, a recording star for Roulette Records, adopted the Rumblers as his backup band. Jimmy went on to become one of the most influential record producers in the industry. The Rumblers always considered him a good friend and certainly an important and significant player in their history. While on tour in the Midwest at Kay Bank Studios in Minneapolis, the Rumblers recorded and released their single “Trudgin” on the Darbo label. It was later played on American Bandstand.

As the band began to diminish due to marriage, military obligations, etc., a different band evolved. Ironically, it consisted of the remaining members of the Rumblers and their longtime rivals, the Checkers. Added were: Glen Dahl (vocals). Mike Metko (sax), Mike Mandel (keyboard), and Larry Coryell (guitar). Many of the engagements were in Canada, notably Kimberly, Cranbrook, Penticton and Vernon, BC. Eventually there were more Checkers than Rumblers and the band became the Checkers, sadly leaving the name “Rumblers” for the use of the hot rod clubs.

THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY

Taken from wikipedia (i'm feeling lazy) :

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, born Norman Carl Odam on October 10, 1947 in Lubbock,Texas, was an incoherent rock and roll performer who invented an early example of the genre that came to be known as psychobilly in the 1960s. While often considered a novelty artist, he considers himself a serious performer.
He recorded his only "hit," the song Paralyzed, in 1968, in what was, apparently, a moment of spare time in a recording studio in Texas. T-Bone Burnett played drums on the record. The lyrics to this magnum opus are unintelligible snarls, growls, and similar vocalisms, surrounded by frantic strumming on acoustic guitar, Burnett's equally frantic drumming, and occasional yelps of what sounds like the song's title, "Paralyzed!"
Five hundred copies of the single were initially pressed. It earned the Cowboy an appearance on Laugh-In, the TV comedy show. Unfortunately, a musicians' strike forced the postponement of some follow-up TV appearances for Odam, and by the time the strike was over, his 15 minutes of fame were up. Paralyzed went on to be featured on several Doctor Demento compilations, and it often appears prominently in lists of the worst recordings ever made. The Cowboy has recorded a number of songs since Paralyzed, one of them being covered by David Bowie on his Heathen album. Odam returned the compliment by recording his version of Space Oddity.
David Bowie has been a fan of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, who likes to be called "The Ledge", since he heard "Paralyzed". Bowie himself has said that the "Stardust" in "Ziggy Stardust" is taken from The Legendary Stardust Cowboy.

THE COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS

Pre-Oblivians & Pre-Reigning Sound

The Compulsive Gamblers include: Greg Cartwright, Jack Yarber.
